Rangers will give Danny Rohl just two weeks to turn things around, ‘they’re that mad’

Danny Rohl is likely to come under immediate pressure at Rangers following his appointment as the club’s new manager.

Rohl was announced as Russell Martin’s replacement on Tuesday (21 October), ending a long-winded managerial search.

On Thursday (23 October), the Gers face Norwegian side SK Brann in the Europa League, for what will be Rohl’s first game in charge.

Rangers then host Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership at the weekend, as they look to close the 13-point gap to table-topping Hearts.

Rangers fans are causing the turmoil at the club

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Rangers fans have caused a lot of the current turmoil at the club with their actions.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the Gers supporters are “that mad” that they will give Rohl only two weeks before turning on him, if the results do not improve.

Both Kevin Muscat and Steven Gerrard pulled out of the race to become the new Rangers boss before the German was appointed.

Wyness added that certain managers may have rejected the job due to the chaotic situation at the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Danny Rohl will somehow have to manage this whole situation.

“I don’t think his style is necessarily great for that. He has, I’m told, probably one of the best attentions to detail around, but then I’d hope that every manager would have attention to detail. It’s what I’d expect from any manager.

“The Rangers fans might be giving him the luxury of two weeks. Who knows up there, they’re that mad. They’ve got to see that their actions have caused a lot of this turmoil.

“I’m convinced there are certain managers who have looked at that fan reaction and said no thank you, I won’t be interested. Maybe that’s even why Muscat ruled himself out.

“Rangers have managed this whole search terribly, and if Kevin Thelwell is the reason some people have not joined, then that doesn’t reflect well on him.

“Does it reflect well on the owners that they’ve appointed Thelwell without understanding those sorts of issues? A lot of unanswered questions and a lot of instability.”

Rangers chief under big scrutiny

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 13 October that Kevin Thelwell’s position at Rangers is under scrutiny in the wake of Martin’s dismissal.

The director of football joined from Everton at the start of the summer but his reign has been marked by underwhelming signings and the calamitous appointment of the former Southampton boss.

Thelwell then received the majority of the blame for the failures during the managerial search, which took over two weeks to complete.

After a number of rejections, Ibrox chiefs reportedly gave Thelwell a less central role in the search for a new boss.
