Ranked: Newcastle’s five biggest Champions League wins after record-breaking rout vs Qarabag

Newcastle broke all kinds of records on their way to a 6-1 Champions League playoff first-leg victory against Qarabag.

Eddie Howe‘s side were dominant in Baku and all but confirmed their passage into the competition’s round of 16 stage before next week’s second leg at St James’ Park.

Anthony Gordon became Newcastle‘s all-time leading scorer in the competition ahead of Alan Shearer, while his 33-minute hat trick was the fastest ever by an Englishman in the Champions League.

The Magpies now look set to progress to the UCL last 16 for the first time, with more records there to be broken if they can continue their fine form on the European stage.

This is their 18th season playing European football since the club was formed in 1881, and Football Insider have looked at their five biggest wins ever in the Champions League after this latest result.

5. Newcastle 3-0 PSV, January 2026

Newcastle have won 3-0 twice in the Champions League this season, after also beating Benfica by the same scoreline earlier in the campaign, but we have picked PSV as the most recent win by such a scoreline.

Howe’s side took a huge step towards qualifying for the last 16 at St James’ Park as Yoane Wissa, Gordon and Harvey Barnes all bagged against their Dutch opponents.

4. Newcastle 4-1 PSG, October 2023

The Magpies’ first season back in Europe’s premier club competition was not particularly one to remember, but their sole victory against the mighty PSG is a night that will live long in the memory.

St James’ Park was a cauldron as it hosted its first European game in over 10 years, and goals from Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn gave Newcastle the lead at the break.

Sean Longstaff then extended their advantage before Lucas Hernandez pulled one back, with Fabian Schar scoring late on to seal a memorable win.

3. Newcastle 4-0 Zeljeznicar, August 2002

Newcastle were forced to play a third-round qualifier to advance to the 2002-03 Champions League group stage, with Bosnian club Zeljeznicar their opponents over two legs.

They safely sealed their passage through to the group stage with a 4-0 rout on home turf after a 1-0 first-leg victory, with Kieron Dyer, Lomana LuaLua, Hugo Viana and Shearer all netting.

2. Union Saint-Gilloise 0-4 Newcastle, October 2025

Another match from this current campaign, Howe’s men went to the home of the Belgian Pro League champions and dispatched of them with ease last October.

Gordon was the star, as he often has been in the Champions League this season, with strikes from the penalty spot in either half.

Nick Woltemade also scored the opener, and Barnes bagged in the 80th minute, to record the club’s biggest-ever win in UCL group or league stage football.

1. Qarabag 1-6 Newcastle, February 2026

Newcastle’s new biggest-ever win in the Champions League, and European football in general, was recorded as they blew Qarabag away in the first half of Wednesday’s game.

Gordon scored four times in the first half, with Malick Thiaw also netting, before Elvin Jafarquliyev pulled one back for the hosts in the 54th minute.

Jacob Murphy then confirmed their record-breaking win with his maiden UCL goal in the 72nd minute, and Newcastle fans sung the night away in Baku.
