Raphinha: Leeds set to re-open contract talks as major development reported – pundit

Leeds United hold “all the cards” in contract negotiations after Raphinha reportedly snubbed the club’s opening offer, according to Alan Hutton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland defender suggested the Whites may now wait until next season to reopen discussions.

As reported by Brazilian news outlet UOL on Monday (21 March), Raphinha has snubbed Leeds’ opening contract proposal as he wants his £70million release clause reduced.

The Yorkshire giants reportedly offered to double the winger’s wages but do not want to budge on the release clause.

Raphinha’s current contract runs until the summer of 2024.

Hutton suggested the Whites may now make the Brazil international wait until after the summer transfer window to discuss a new deal.

“All the cards are in Leeds’ hands because I don’t think anybody will pay £70million for him,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“They can speak about this next season when it is a problem for Leeds, when they either cash in on him or lose him for a free.

“It’s probably going to be a difficult season coming for him but this is where he has to be professional. Keep his head and just keep on doing what he’s doing best.

“He’ll have to just bide his time and work hard. If he’s not willing to sign a new contract, then that’s fine, that’s his decision.”

Raphinha joined Leeds for a reported £17million-plus-add-ons from Rennes back in October 2020.

He has been a standout performer at Elland Road, with 15 goals and 12 assists in 59 appearances.
