Ray Parlour has claimed that he would prefer Dele Alli in his side to world record signing Paul Pogba.

The former Arsenal midfielder made the huge claim as he assessed the credentials of emerging Tottenham star Alli.

The 20-year-old midfielder has upped his game in recent weeks after a slow start to the campaign, most notably scoring in Spurs’ last two Premier League matches against West Brom and Manchester City as well as for England during the international break.

Alli, who won the PFA Young Player of the Year award last season, plays in a similar attacking midfield role for his club to Pogba, who has had a slow start at United following his £89million transfer from Juventus.

Parlous has no doubts about the effectiveness of Alli as he compared him favourably to the French sensation.

“Dele Alli is superb. The debate was Alli or Pogba. A lot of people would go with Alli,” Parlour told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT.

“He has a knack of getting into the right areas and scoring a goal. He is an all-round good footballer. Spurs have a real gem in their side. What a signing for £5million from MK Dons.”

Alli is just two months into his second season at Tottenham after initially being loaned back to League One following his January 2015 transfer to White Hart Lane.
