Alex Bruce has urged Leeds United to hand Gaetano Berardi a new contract after his serious injury setback.

The former Leeds defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Whites should show faith in the 31-year-old after his years of service at Elland Road.

Leeds confirmed last week that the Swiss star is set for as long as nine months on the sidelines after tearing his cruciate ligament in the win over Derby County.

He is also out of contract at Elland Road after he signed a short-term extension to see him through to the end of the extended Championship season.

After such a cruel blow for the defender, Bruce admits he is desperate to see Leeds reward Berardi for his loyalty with a new deal.

“I hope to god they do reward him with a new contract,” Bruce told Football Insider.

“For that to happen is really, really cruel. He’s been there a number of years, he’s always been passionate whenever I’ve seen him play, the kind player you’d want in the trenches alongside you.

“I’m sure when he’s fit they’ll need him at some point next season and he’s deserved his chance in the Premier League with the efforts that he’s put in. Let’s hope he can recover quickly and get a year’s extension or a new contract of some way, shape or form so they can get him better and on the mend as well.”

Berardi played 25 times across all competitions for Leeds during the 2019/20 season and featured in a multitude of different positions.

He is the Whites’ longest-serving member of the senior squad, having arrived at Elland Road back in 2014.
