Redknapp: Chelsea stop-gap is better than his Tottenham reported £50m equivalent

Jamie Redknapp has claimed in the Mail that Chelsea unsung hero Marcos Alonso has had a better season than Tottenham’s Danny Rose.
Former Spurs midfielder and high profile pundit Redknapp has been impressed at how the west Londoners’ left wing-back has belied his stop-gap status since his reintroduction into English football this season.
Rose has been widely praised for his performances for Spurs this season, despite missing the last two months due to injury, and the Sun report he is being chased by Manchester City this summer for a potential £50million fee.
But Redknapp is convinced that Alonso has made even more of an impact for Chelsea than his Spurs counterpart and paid the Spaniard the great compliment of naming him in his team of the season.
“Marcos Alonso is Chelsea’s unsung hero. When he signed, it looked like he was a stop-gap to allow Antonio Conte to play three at the back,” wrote Redknapp in his weekly Mail column.

“Alonso would be exposed in a back four but in Conte’s system he can hurt defenders with his galloping runs, knowing that Gary Cahill is covering him. He pips Danny Rose to the left wing back position in my team of the year.
“Just two defenders have scored more league goals than Alonso this season and his fantastic free-kick killed off Bournemouth. The way Alonso’s team-mates stepped aside for him to take it shows their confidence in him.”
Chelsea paid a fee of £23million to sign the 26-year-old from Fiorentina and he has justified that outlay by starting every Premier League match for the leaders since September.
Alonso has scored five goals and supplied two assists in 30 matches in all competitions, with all his seven goal contributions coming in league encounters.
In other Tottenham news, the club have terminated the contract of one of their defenders.
