Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp says that Tottenham will now be considered firm favourites to overcome a “dangerous” Juventus side in their Champions League clash after rescuing a draw in the first leg.
Spurs endured a nightmare opening 10 minutes in Turin on Tuesday night, as Gonzalo Higuain netted twice, one from the penalty spot, to give the Italian giants an early advantage and sink the hearts of the travelling Tottenham supporters.
However Mauricio Pochettino’s men wrestled their way back into the game, with Harry Kane’s first half strike halving the deficit, although Higuain missed a second penalty just before the half time which could have dashed the north London side’s chances of a comeback.
The second half was an even affair, but it was Christian Eriksen’s low free kick which drew the only blood of the last 45 minutes, and secured a draw alongside two vital away goals ahead of the clash at Wembley in three weeks.
As a result, Carragher has boldly stated Spurs are “hot favourites” against the Italian champions, and that Spurs have the talent to take down any side that stands in their way in Europe.
He told Sky Sports’ The Debate podcast (13/02): “Tottenham are hot favourites now.
“Juventus are still a dangerous side but Tottenham, if they get their game plan right, have players who can hurt any team.”
Their clash against Juventus, the first competitive meeting between the two sides, means that Spurs have now taken on both of last season’s finalists in the Champions League, having drawn and beaten current holders Real Madrid during their unbeaten group stage run.
