Redknapp delivers verdict on Tom Davies after landmark Everton win

By Alex Stevens

Jamie Redknapp has hailed Tom Davies following his sensational display for Everton in their landmark win against Manchester City.

Ronald Koeman’s side demolished City 4-0 at Goodison Park in Sunday’s Premier League upset, with teenager Davies scoring the third goal in a memorable win.

The 18-year-old Everton academy product provided further proof of a talent that has made the coaching staff at the club sit up and take notice during his progression through the ranks.

The central midfielder set up the opening goal for Romelu Lukaku and then produced a sensational piece of skill to create and then finish the third of Everton’s four strikes.

It was the central midfielder’s first goal for his boyhood club in his 10th appearance.

“Tom Davies first caught my eye when he came off the bench against Hull in December,” Redknapp wrote in his Mail column. “Straight away he sparked energy into Everton’s midfield. I couldn’t believe that Davies was just 18 — and not just because of his beard.

“He hardly wasted the ball against Manchester City and I loved the way he chopped back to beat Gael Clichy and Yaya Toure in the build-up to his goal. If Cristiano Ronaldo had done it we’d be talking about it for months.”

Davies played the full 90 minutes against City as he took advantage of Idrissa Gueye’s absence at the African Cup of Nations to deliver his best performance yet in an Everton shirt.

New signing Morgan Schneiderlin came off the bench after 65 minutes of Sunday’s encounter to demonstrate the growing competition in Koeman’s midfield.

Everton have consolidated their position of seventh in the Premier League table following their ninth win in 21 matches of the campaign.
