Stoke City want James McClean to lead their campaign for promotion back to the Premier League, according to a report.
The Daily Record live transfer blog (3:27pm) is reporting that the Potters have bid £4million for the Irish international, with West Brom holding out for £6million.
The 29-year-old winger is a well-known Hoops fanatic, who recently played at Celtic Park in Scott Brown’s testimonial, where he received rapturous applause.
He recently revealed, as reported by the Scottish Sun, that he would still love to play for the Bhoys one day, but if the move to Stoke goes ahead the chances of that happening will be extremely slim.
Football Insider verdict
There is no denying that McClean would love to one day make his dream come true and play for the Hoops, but it just seems highly unlikely that it is ever going to happen. The Hoops just are not in the market for a 29-year-old left winger, especially when you consider the in-form James Forrest will be competing for that position next season. Some fans would love the Hoops to move for McClean as he is such a huge fan, but that doesn’t mean that he would make the team any better. If he wasn’t such a huge Celtic fanatic there would be uproar at the prospect of signing a veteran who had just been relegated from the Premier League. Sadly for McClean, it looks like he is only ever going to play for the Hoops in either testimonials or friendlies. The chances of Brendan Rodgers ever bidding for the player seem extremely remote to say the least, and most fans would back that stance.
