Reliable journalist delivers update on future of Aston Villa duo amid reported talks

By Amir Mir

Aston Villa have received no contact from clubs about duo Rudy Gestede and Pierluigi Gollini, according to a reliable journalist.

BBC Midlands football reporter Pat Murphy claimed on his personal Twitter account that rumours linking the duo away from Villa Park is currently “agent talk”.

The Sun claimed on Tuesday morning that Premier League club West Brom will land Rudy Gestede for £7 million when the January transfer window opens next month.

Meanwhile, Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport also claimed that goalkeeper Gollini could be heading back to Italy to join Inter Milan in a loan-to-buy deal.

Both have featured for Villa this season in the Championship, with Gestede starting only seven games, but Gollini being named in the starting XI on 20 occasions.

Benin international Gestede has scored four goals in 17 appearances, but it is Gollini who has been coming under-fire from supporters for his performances on the pitch.

The 21-year-old, who was purchased in the summer from then Serie A side Hellas Verona, has made a number of costly mistakes, which has now resulted in him being drooped from the first team.

Steve Bruce opted to play keeper Mark Bunn between the sticks during the 1-0 win at QPR on Sunday, with the shot stopper putting in a top performance.

Football Insider verdict:

Steve Bruce must keep hold of Gestede as he can still be a valuable asset to the team, especially considering Villa will be short of three attackers when the African Cup of Nations start in January. The Benin forward has simply not been given the proper game time to establish himself in the Championship, but his aerial threat can cause any team a problem. As for Gollini, he can pack his bags and leave the club because he has cost the Midlands side too many points this season. The shotstopper should develop his football elsewhere as he brings a lot of nerves to the defensive backline.
