Newcastle United could have Jonjo Shelvey fit to play against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening, according to a reliable journalist.
Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope claimed on his personal Twitter account that Shelvey, 26, may feature against his former club this weekend if a scan he is due to undergo does not highlight any serious damage in his knee.
That would no doubt be a major boost for the Magpies, who have seen Shelvey hit a great run of form in the last few weeks.
However it is understood that there is fear of a long-term spell on the sidelines.
Hope added that the six-times England international has been receiving pain-killing injections in his groin, which was starting to bother him against Bournemouth at the weekend.
Understand Jonjo Shelvey could yet be fit for Liverpool on Sat if knee scan reveals no serious damage once swelling eases. But there's a fear of longer-term layoff, too. He's also been receiving painkilling injections in groin in recent weeks & was feeling that late on at B'mouth

Shelvey has been ever-present in Rafa Benitez’s side this season.
The former Swansea and Liverpool midfielder has made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal in the process which came against Luton in the FA Cup last month.
The Newcastle Chronicle has reported that Shelvey is the biggest earner at St James’ Park, pocketing £80,000-a-week on his deal, so for Benitez to lose him for an extended period would be a massive blow in multiple ways.
In other Newcastle United news, Everton are in the hunt to sign this £35,000-a-week Magpies player.
