Journalist: Forget Rangers manager link, 46-year-old will soon be appointed

By James Black

Derek McInnes should be appointed as Rangers manager by the end of the international break, according to a reliable journalist.

Scottish Sun reporter Andy Devlin, who broke the news of the board meeting which saw Pedro Caixinha sacked as Rangers manager, claimed on his personal Twitter account that he would be “surprised” if the Aberdeen boss wasn’t in charge at Ibrox before domestic action starts again on November 18th.

The well-placed journalist also rubbished claims that Rangers were set to speak with Steve McClaren over the position – calling the report “absolute guff” – before calling other names being mentioned “noise to be ignored” before the Ibrox giants swoop for McInnes.

McInnes is the bookies’ favourite to replace Caixinha after leading the Dons to three consecutive second-place finishes in the Scottish Premiership and a Scottish League Cup win in 2015.

The Gers would need to negotiate compensation with Aberdeen to release McInnes from his Pittodrie contract.

The 46-year-old held talks with Sunderland over the summer about taking over from David Moyes but opted to remain with the Dons before Simon Grayson was named manager at the Stadium of Light.

A host of managers, including Steve McClaren, Alan Pardew, Alex McLeish and Michel Preud’homme have all been linked with the Rangers job since Caixinha was dismissed.

Graeme Murty has taken interim charge of the Light Blues and has taken the Gers to two wins from two in his second stint in temporary charge.

Football Insider verdict:

Rangers fans will no doubt be delighted to hear it looks like the Light Blues are set on appointing McInnes. Some of the names mentioned so far have left fans worried about the direction the club was headed but the appointment of McInnes should tick most boxes for supporters. If McInnes is the next Rangers manager, he will need to get off to a good start or any goodwill from supporters will quickly evaporate. With a double-header against Aberdeen coming up soon it would also give him an early chance to get a good idea of where his new side are.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has demanded the club to seal a six-figure deal for this manager.
