Rene Meulensteen delivers harsh words for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his role in ‘breaking’ Man United
Manchester United lost 3-1 to Brentford away in dismal fashion once again at the GTech Community Stadium.
Should Ruben Amorim get sacked by the club, Man United were linked to Michael Carrick in recent weeks as a potential suitor for the Portuguese head coach.
Man United’s loss against Brentford left Amorim’s side with eight points from six Premier League games and searching for more answers.
To rub more salt into the wounds, Man United’s summer transfer target Victor Osimhen showed the Red Devils what they could have had as Galatasaray beat Liverpool 1-0 in the Champions League.

Rene Meulensteen exposes ‘broken’ Man United
Sir Jim Ratcliffe announced Man United’s new stadium plans earlier in 2025, despite several rounds of redundancies since taking over sporting operations at the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s former coach, Rene Meulensteen, exposed Ratcliffe for his role in Man United’s downfall despite their investment.
Meulensteen spoke on Sam Allardyce’s No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, saying: “I think Man United are broken in two ways. Firstly, they’re broken on the pitch and everyone can see that.
“They did well against Chelsea, but you need to put that into context after their Champions League game and the red card. They were a bit off, and credit United still got it over the line, and then they went to Brentford and credit to Brentford, they had a game plan, but United had no ability to turn it around.
“But I also think the club are broken off the field. The culture that he [Rooney] was part of, that I was part of, that Sir Alex [Ferguson] built was a fantastic culture that you were proud to be a part of.
“It was a unified culture where everyone felt a part of it and felt they had value, and now all the things that have happened in the background with the ownership, with Jim Ratcliffe, with the redundancies, and everything else, the whole culture that Sir Alex Ferguson had built over those 26 years has been completely stripped away.”
Rene Meulensteen echoes Wayne Rooney’s Man United claim
Meulensteen mentioned the comments made by Wayne Rooney in his interview, with the former Man United captain having also made claims about the club being broken.
Rooney has described Man United as being broken in past comments, and Meulensteen clearly feels the same way.
Manchester United’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson managers | Win % |
David Moyes | 50.9% |
Ryan Giggs | 50% |
Louis Van Gaal | 52.4% |
Jose Mourinho | 58.3% |
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer | 54.8% |
Michael Carrick | 66.6% |
Erik ten Hag | 56.3% |
Ruud van Nistelrooy | 75% |
Ruben Amorim | 38.8% |
Man United have been searching for a way to return to their glory days of the past ever since Ferguson retired in 2013, but the club haven’t come close since.
Amorim will hope that he is trusted to return the club to their past glories, but if Meulensteen’s comments are anything to go by, there are much bigger issues at the club.
