Report: 27-year-old Celtic defender could leave this summer

By Will Butcher

Cristian Gamboa could be offloaded by Celtic this summer just one season after joining Brendan Rodgers’ side, according to a report.

The Scottish Herald claim the 27-year-old defender’s future in Glasgow is in doubt after completing a move to Parkhead for £1million from West Brom.

Costa Rica international Gamboa made just 27 appearances in all competitions, starting only 13 Scottish Premiership matches throughout the 2016-17 campaign.

Known for his electrifying pace, Gamboa was forced to watch from the sidelines for much of the campaign due to the form of Sweden international Mikael Lustig on the right side of defence.

Rodgers is likely to bolster his side this summer as he looks to complete a second successive domestic treble as well as going one better in the Champions League next season.

That could mean the former Liverpool boss looks to offload a number of fringe players in order to make room for new recruits, and that could see Gamboa fall victim.

It remains to be seen if the defender will leave, with two years remaining on the three-year deal he signed last summer with the 48-time Scottish champions.

Football Insider verdict:

Gamboa can count himself highly unlucky to have played as little as he did this season, with the performances of Lustig proving too good to be able to drop the versatile defender. Lustig is likely to remain first choice next season, and that means Gamboa must look to secure a move elsewhere for the good of his career before it becomes in danger of stagnating. Rodgers is reportedly in talks to sign loanee Patrick Roberts for £5million, according to The Mirror, and transfer money will be needed to help fund a move for the England youth international. If the Hoops are able to recuperate the £1million spent on Gamboa, then they should sell.

In other Celtic transfer news, the Hoops are eyeing a move for this 22-year-old international to replace Moussa Dembele.
