Aston Villa are preparing a bid for Limerick’s Chiedozie Ogbene who has attracted the interest of Chelsea after an impressive season in the League of Ireland, according to a report.
The Irish Examiner claims that the Villans have ‘concrete interest’ in the striker and that they’re set to make a bid.
The 20-year-old scored eight times in 32 games for Limerick in the league, and has been on several trials with English clubs such as Chelsea since the league finished in October.
The attack-minded player still has a year left on his current deal after joining Limerick in January 2017 from rivals Cork City.
Football Insider Verdict
Steve Bruce has had a lot of injury headaches with Aston Villa this season, none more so than first-choice striker Jonathan Kodjia potentially being ruled out for the season. The Villans are aiming for automatic promotion and Bruce knows that losing a goalscorer like Kodija is a huge blow. Ogbene seems like a gamble worth taking – he’s scoring goals and has attracted Chelsea scouts. There’s also the bonus that the player is only 20-years-old, and could be an asset for the future as well as potentially making an impact straight away for Aston Villa. Squad depth is crucial but it remains to be seen whether the youngster can make the big step up to a challenging division like the Championship.
