Tottenham are keeping a close eye on Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot but are not close to securing his capture as claimed, according to a report.
Football news website football.london claim that Spurs do indeed hold interest in the 18-year-old defensive prospect but crucially report that the Mirror’s report stating that a deal worth in the region of £850,000 is close to completion is not true.
It is said that Spurs are yet to make an official approach for the youngster’s potential transfer and that the numbers being discussed by the Mirror are inaccurate, with the English youngster being eyed as a signing to join the north London club’s academy as opposed to the senior squad.
Wilmot’s senior debut for Stevenage came back in October, and he has made just four appearances for the League Two club’s first team since, not one coming in the league.
Football Insider verdict
Spurs were always expected to have a quiet January and halfway through the month it certainly appears to be going that way. However, although Wilmot might not be a signing for the here and now, his capture can still be viewed with excitement, as the club line up a swoop for one of the hottest prospects around. There are some big names being linked with a swoop for the 18-year-old and if Spurs can pip ahead of their rivals, it would be somewhat of a coup. Fans will undoubtedly be seeking more though, but they can prepare themselves for a window of disappointment.
