Garry Monk has revealed that he “definitely” wants Leeds to make two new signings during the January window.
The Yorkshire Evening Post claim the manager’s priority is to sign a striker and a winger to give his team the best chance of maintaining their form in the Championship run-in.
It is said that Leeds retain their “long-standing interest” in West Ham forward Ashley Fletcher, 21, and are also keeping close tabs on Norwich wide forward Sergi Canos.
The Elland Road outfit made a recent approach for Canos but face strong competition for his signature from Brentford, who are planning a £3million bid for a player who had a successful loan period at Griffin Park while on loan from Liverpool last weekend.
The Yorkshire giants ended the weekend superbly placed for a promotion challenge after sealing their 10th win in 13 league games against Derby on Friday night.
Some of the results elsewhere also went the way of Monk’s side, meaning they are in third position and just seven points adrift of leaders Newcastle.
Supporters are calling for the new-look board, with Andrea Radrizzani joining his countryman Massimo Cellino in taking shared control of the club, to make the investments necessary to give the team a push in the second half of the season.
Monk was forced to field a makeshift defence against fellow promotion hopefuls Derby in the absence of regular left-back Charlier Taylor and senior centre-back pairing Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper.
“We definitely need two,” Monk said as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post. “But we don’t need too much. We’ve had to make changes (against Derby) and put out a bit of a makeshift back four, and ideally you don’t want to face those situations too often.
“We’re just those one or two away from giving this group their best chance.”
The arrival of Italian sports media mogul Radrizzani has coincided with the January transfer window and the timing provides the opportunity to reinforce a team that is challenging strongly for promotion.
But Radrizzani has made it clear he will not bankroll huge spending this month and that his priorities are modernising the club and its infrastructure.
