Everton close in on January signing of £100,000-a-week Man United player - report

By Alex Stevens

Everton have stepped up their pursuit of Memphis Depay by making an approach t0 Manchester United about a January deal, according to a report.

The Express claim Ronald Koeman wants to sign the United outcast when the window re-opens and take him on loan until the end of the season.

It is said that Everton and Juventus have both joined Roma in sounding out the Premier League giants about their plans for the Holland international signed by Louis Van Gaal.

Depay is set to spend the second half of the season away from Old Trafford with a view to a more permanent departure next summer.

The 22-year-old is currently low down the pecking order at Old Trafford and has made just seven appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side this season, completing only 126 minutes in total.

Depay has endured a torrid spell with United since he moved to the club in 2015 and it is reported that Koeman wants to help him restart his stuttering career.

Football Leaks revealed earlier this year that Depay earns a basic £100,000-a-week at United, topped up by appearances and performance bonuses.

He usually operates as a winger and has struggled to cement a regular place in the United team, with his situation not improving since Mourinho’s summer appointment.

Depay was used as a second-half substitute on Wednesday night for Holland in their 1-1 friendly draw with Belgium.

Everton are hopeful of a European spot this season and are currently seventh-placed in the Premier League table, just six points behind Arsenal in fourth.

Toffees manager Koeman already has the wide men such as Yannick Bolasie, Gerard Deulofeu, Kevin Mirallas and Aaron Lennon.

Depay could add some real quality to the Merseyside club if he can replicate the form he showed at Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven.

He announced his name on the European stage during his 124 games for PSV, scoring 50 goals and supplying 29 assists.

In other Everton transfer news, they are braced for a transfer bombardment following Koeman’s comments.
