Report: Everton set to battle PL rivals for 21-year-old, club want loan-to-buy deal

By Dominic Toner

Everton are interested in signing RB Leipzig striker Davie Selke, according to a report.

The Mail claim that the Toffees are plotting to strengthen their forward options in January and the 21-year-old is a potential target, while Premier League rivals West Ham and Swansea also interested.

The report details that German club RB Leipzig are open to letting Selke leave on loan in January, but any move is likely to include an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

Selke played a starring role last season as RB Leipzig achieved promotion from Bundesliga 2, scoring 10 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions.

The youngster has found his game time limited this campaign and has started in just one of his 10 appearances.

The German club have been the surprise packages in the division and are battling Bayern Munich for the title, but are three points behind them after a 3-0 defeat in their last game.

They are now prepared to allow Selke to move after he completed a £6million deal to them at the start of the last season.

Selke is regarded as one of the upcoming stars in Germany and is expected to break into the senior squad in the future.

He has already scored seven goals in nine appearances for Germany’s Under-21s and is yet to play any club football outside of his homeland.

Football Insider verdict:

Selke has proven during spells with RB Leipzig and Werder Bremen that he can score goals, which is hugely impressive given his age. The 21-year-old clearly has a big talent and has been touted as a future star in Germany. Everton currently have Romelu Lukaku as their star striker, but he does not have much competition for his position. Ronald Koeman is short of strikers in his squad and Selke has the potential to be a good signing for the Merseyside club. The German is a strong striker and has the physique which could match the demands of the Premier League. The Toffees would face a battle to complete his deal, but Koeman should be able to persuade Selke to pick Everton over West Ham and a struggling Swansea side.

In other Everton transfer news, the club’s talks with a proven Premier League midfielder have broken down.
