Report: Everton will move for top-flight captain in January, defender in final year of contract
By Derek Smithson
Everton will make a fresh move to sign Porto defender Ivan Marcano in January, according to a report.
Portuguese outlet A Bola claim that the Toffees tried to land the 30-year-old Spaniard in the later stages of the summer window, but that the Premeira Liga side managed to keep the player.
It is understood that the Merseyside club will return with another attempt when the window re-opens in January, when they will be able to get him at a cut-price fee.
Marcano is entering the final year of his contract and the report details that Porto want to tie their captain down to a new long-term deal to fend off Everton’s interest.
The defender has taken up the captaincy at the top flight Portuguese side this season and played in all four league games so far, scoring one goal and picking up one assists.

He is regarded as an integral part of the Porto side, but they have let his contract run down to the final year.
Marcano has made 115 appearances during his time with Porto and also has experience at European clubs such as Rubin Kazan, Olumpiacos and Villarreal.
He has never played in English football before, but Ronald Koeman’s side look set to try bring him to the Premier League at the next opportunity.
Football Insider verdict:
Everton just missed out on Marcano in the summer and it’s understandable why they tried to land the centre-back. The defender is an accomplished footballer with top-level experience and brilliant leadership qualities. Koeman is also short of options in the centre of defence and could have done with another reinforcement in the summer. Ashley Williams, Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Phil Jagielka are the current options at the back, with Ramiro Funes Mori currently out injured. However, Everton could have done with some extra quality in defence and there squad is likely to be stretched due to their European and domestic commitments.
In other Everton transfer news, Joey Barton has come up with his own explanation of why Ross Barkley’s deadline day move fell through.
