Revealed: Liverpool made audacious move for 22-year-old from PL title rivals – report
By Aramide Oladipo
Liverpool made an audacious attempt to sign Manchester United defender Luke Shaw this summer before securing the signature of Andrew Robertson, according to a report.
The Sun claims that Merseyside club were eager to add a new full-back to the squad ahead of the new season and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp identified the 22-year-old as the perfect fit.
The newspaper claims that the Englishman was high on the Reds’ summer targets but United were unwilling to sell him to one of their biggest rivals.
The report claims that Shaw is unlikely to feature as a first-team starter next season as United boss Jose Mourinho still does not have enough confidence in the youngster.
Liverpool have since signed Robertson from Championship side Hull City as they look to deploy a natural left full-back instead of relying on the versatility of James Milner next season.
Shaw’s current contract at Old Trafford runs out next summer.
Football Insider verdict
Jurgen Klopp would be the perfect manager to help Luke Shaw reignite his footballing career. Last season, Mourinho showed that he was not willing to put an arm around the youngster’s shoulder but insisted on publicly criticising the defender following an inconsistent start to the campaign. Klopp seems like the type of manager who would take the Englishman out of the limelight so he could solely focus on improving his game. Despite his reported doubts over the England international, there was no chance that the Portuguese manager would have considered allowing him leave to a league rival, especially Liverpool. United will need to keep hold of the Englishman regardless as they currently don’t possess a natural full-back to perform on the left side.
In other Liverpool news, this international centre-back on the Reds’ radar is set to complete his medical ahead of a move.
