Times report delivers update on Liverpool 27-year-old transfer possibility after rave reviews

By Will Butcher

Liverpool are “unlikely” to complete a deal that would see Mamadou Sakho move to loan side Crystal Palace on a permanent basis, according to a report.

The Times claim that Chelsea’s John Terry could be eyed as a replacement signing for Sakho, with the 27-year-old likely to return to Anfield in the summer.

It is believed that Sakho’s move to Sam Allardyce’s side in January does not include a permanent clause, giving Palace no advantage over other clubs in trying to lure the defender to Selhurst Park.

Sakho, who has 28 caps with France, has earned rave reviews for his form with the Eagles with his best performance coming in the 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.

The former Paris Saint-Germain defender has a contract with the Merseyside giants until the summer of 2020, after moving to Anfield back in 2013 for a fee of £17million.

However, Sakho was ostracised by Klopp at the start of the season after a bust up during the Reds’ pre-season tour of America that saw the lofty defender return to Melwood early.

Now one of the first names on Allardyce’s team sheet, Sakho will need replacin if he does not move to Palace on a permanent basis with the report claiming Terry could be that man.

Football Insider verdict:

Sakho’s form with the London-based side is more than enough evidence that he deserves a second chance at Anfield. He has been instrumental in Palace’s turn around in form that has all but saved them from Premier League relegation under Allardyce this term, despite coming under constant pressure from clubs boasting strong attacking talent. The Reds are currently failing at the heart of their defence, with Ragnar Klavan, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip struggling to plug the flow of goals going past them. Bringing Sakho back could be the key to stemming that leak, with plenty of years left on his current contract to be given another go in Merseyside.
