Newcastle United are set to have scouts keep close tabs on Trabzonspor midfielder Okay Yokuslu in his side’s clash with Osmanlispor on Monday, according to a report.
Football news website Turkish-Football claim that the Magpies are jetting out to Turkey to watch over the versatile 24-year-old with an eye to a prospective transfer, with his exit said to be a near-certainty this summer.
It is claimed that Trabzonspor are willing to let the colossus midfielder, who stands at 6’3″ and can play at centre back as well as in the middle of the park, depart this summer for the right price, and that Spanish media are describing him as the Turkish Sergio Busquets.
Yokuslu has made 29 appearances across all competitions for his side this season, scoring twice, and also has 11 caps under his belt for the Turkish national team.
Football Insider verdict
While Turkey is hardly a top European league, there are no doubt some bargains to be found, hence the Magpies’ activity in the country. Newcastle seem pretty well stocked with midfielders, from regular starter Jonjo Shelvey to former mainstay Mikel Merino, and hunting another one might cast doubts over the future of the current options. Still, it does not hurt to have numerous players at your disposal, and Isaac Hayden is the only out-and-out defensive midfielder at the club, although Mohamed Diame has played something of a similar role over recent months. Yokuslu seems to match up with Diame’s physical stature and style of play, so perhaps it is the former Hull City man who is in the firing line.
In other Newcastle United news, a five word statement from Rafael Benitez has made it clear what the club need to do next.
