Report: Newcastle close to deal for 27-year-old international star on former hero's word
By Russell Edge
Newcastle United are lining up a swoop for Peru international goalkeeper Pedro Gallese after a recommendation from former star Nobby Solano, according to a report.
Peruvian newspaper Libero claim on their website that the 27-year-old shot stopper is close to sealing a move to England and have now revealed that it is the Magpies who are the ones interested in his signature.
It is said that the Veracruz star was identified as a top talent by former Newcastle hero Solano, and it is on his word that the Magpies are pursuing the 34-time-capped international, who is contracted at the Mexican side until 2019.
He made his debut for the national side back in 2014 and has been their firm first choice ever since, helping his side reach the World Cup qualifying play offs, which will see him and his team mates take on New Zealand for a place at next summer’s World Cup finals.

It was no secret that Newcastle were in the hunt for a shot stopper in the summer transfer window and it would appear they have not changed their mind if the report is to be believed. Signing a goalkeeper based on the opinion of one former star, a midfielder at that, seems a little far fetched but if interest is serious the Magpies will have conducted a thorough scouting mission. Gallese’s arrival would almost certainly end Karl Darlow’s time at the club, who despite sitting on the bench in recent weeks, is the most disposable of the goalkeepers at St James’ Park, with Rob Elliot firmly number one and Freddie Woodman a highly rated prospect. Still, it seems this report should be taken with a pinch of salt, but it at least gives fans an idea of what to expect come the January transfer window.
In other Newcastle United news, this investor is looking to replicate the success of one of England’s biggest clubs at St James’ Park.
