Report: Newcastle star eyed to follow in footsteps of PL legend with big money swoop

Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles is a summer target for Chelsea with the Blues considering the Magpies ace the “next John Terry,” according to a report.

The Mirror states that the former Nottingham Forest enforcer has attracted the interest of the reigning champions for the way he has captained the side in a difficult season for the Tyneside outfit.

Chelsea are said to be willing to splash out a big money bid of £30million to acquire the services of the 24-year-old who is under contract at St James’ Park until 2023, after putting pen to paper on a new deal this season.

His arrival is being plotted to fill the void of Chelsea legend John Terry, who won five top flight titles and made 492 Premier League appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Football Insider verdict:

In what has been a tough season for the Magpies, one where they have dabbled with relegation, Lascelles has stood out above the rest. It would stand to reason that with the progression he is making under Rafa Benitez he would be destined for bigger and better things, and Chelsea certainly would fit that bill. The Blues have struggled with injuries this season, and with Gary Cahill and David Luiz sidelined, it shows a gap in the side that requires strengthening. If the Londoners came calling with the money and potential opportunities they can offer the Newcastle star, it would be difficult for the Magpies to turn down as well as the promise of a big pay-hike the player would almost definitely want to grasp.
