Report: Arsenal seal midfielder deal, player to join on Sunday

By Alex Stevens

Jon Toral is set to arrive at Rangers on Sunday as he puts the finishing touches to a loan move from Arsenal, according to a report.

The Scottish Mail claim the Ibrox club are close to capturing the central midfielder after agreeing the terms of a deal in which he will spend the second half of the campaign with Mark Warburton’s team.

Toral’s season-long loan at La Liga outfit Granada was cut short on Saturday when he was omitted from the team that were thrashed 5-0 by Real Madrid.

The 21-year-old is now in line to spend the second half of the season at Rangers after his parent club Arsenal gave the green light to his second loan transfer of the season.

With Rangers confident that they have secured a deal for a player who has proved his pedigree in the Championship in England, the Mail report that Toral is set to make his debut against high flying Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.

Rangers have a mid-season friendly scheduled against the second-placed team in the Germany top division on Sunday of next week as they step up preparations for the second half of the campaign following their winter break.

Warburton’s side are second in the Scottish Premiership but a distant 19 point behind runaway leaders and bitter rivals Celtic.

Toral, who joined the Arsenal academy from Barcelona at the same time as Hector Bellerin in 2o11, has recently returned to fitness after a spell out with an ankle injury but was overlooked for much of the campaign when fit and has made just six Granda appearances.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton knows Toral well from their Brentford days, with Toral having a successful loan season at the London club in 2014-15 in the side as they challenged for promotion to the Premier League.

The Spaniard scored six goals and supplied two assists in 37 appearances for Brentford.

He also had a statistically even more impressive campaign at Birmingham last season, where he scored eight goals and supplied four assists in 38 matches and was voted the Championship club’s player of the year.

In other Rangers transfer news, this forward arrived earlier this week after a number of bids were tabled by the Ibrox club.
