Report: Tottenham fielded January interest in ace, braced for £35m summer raid

By Dominic Toner

Manchester United are interested in signing Tottenham ace Eric Dier, according to a report.

The Sun claim that United manager Jose Mourinho is plotting a £35million move for the 23-year-old in the summer.

It is understood that Mourinho is a huge fan of the England international and has watched him on a number of occasions this season.

The report details that United were planning a January move for Dier, but Spurs instantly rejected all talk of any transfer below £45million.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino is believed to see him as a key player in the club’s future and is adamant he is not for sale.

Dier is a versatile player that was used by both club and country as a defensive midfielder last season.

However, he has dropped back into a three-man defence for Spurs this campaign and is playing alongside Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

He has become an important player for the north London club since his arrival from Sporting in 2014 and is an ever-present in the side this season.

The versatile ace has made 34 appearances across all competitions, but is still awaiting his first goal.

Football Insider verdict:

Pochettino has built a young English core at White Hart Lane in recent season and Dier is certainly at the core of that. The 23-year-old is a vital asset to the squad and has proved he can play in more than one position. He is helping Spurs stay defensively solid this season and has made a smooth switch to the right centre-back role in a back three. However, he arguably performed to a higher standard as a defensive midfielder last season and it would be no surprise to see him return to that position in the future. Spurs should try and avoid selling to their Premier League rivals if they can  and will be wary of the United revolution taking place under Mourinho. Dier would certainly be a huge success at Old Trafford and could even take the role of the ageing Michael Carrick, but may still feel he has a lot to achieve with this young Spurs side.
