Report: Tottenham launch talks to snap up 13-goal, 5'6" CL flyer from third placed side
Tottenham have held initial talks over a potential swoop for Portuguese side Sporting’s 22-year-old winger Gelson Martins ahead of the summer window, according to a report.
Portuguese publication Record claim on their website that Spurs have held informal discussions to determine whether a move for the 16-cap speed machine is a realistic aim, having been in dazzling for this season.
Martins, who stands at a diminutive 5’6″, has featured 48 times across all competitions this season, which includes six appearances in the Champions League, picking up a goal and two assists in Europe.
His domestic form has helped Sporting sit third in Portugal’s top flight, and he has 13 goals and 12 assists across both the league and cups.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has tended not to operate with out and out wingers, rather choosing to start the likes of central attacking midfielders Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli out wide – although Heung-min Son is an exception. The likes of Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura have had to settle for roles on the fringes and unless there is set to be a change of tactics in north London, a big money move for Martins seems unlikely. If they can snap him up on a bargain swoop, then perhaps something could happen, but the club need strengthening elsewhere before focusing on those out wide.
