Real Madrid playmaker Isco rejected the chance to sign for Tottenham last year, according to a report.
Spanish publication AS claims that Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino made a telephone call to the 25-year-old in the summer in order to persuade him to make a move to White Hart Lane in 2016.
However, the newspaper reports that the Spaniard refused as he was desperate to become a first-team regular at the Bernabeu.
The report claims that Pochettino made a second attempt to snap up the midfield maestro in the January transfer window but Isco once again declined despite struggling to get into the team with the Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema the preferred options.
It turned out to be the correct decision in the long run for the Spain international as he played a crucial role in helping Madrid become the first club to secure back-to-back Champions League titles.
The Spaniard was also involved in the matchday squad for the 2014 Champions League triumph but he was left on the substitutes bench.
Although Spurs have progressed into genuine title contenders in the last couple of season, acquiring Isco’s signature might have been enough to get them over the line to earn their first ever Premier League title.
Isco is set to start from the outset when Spurs face the La Liga champions on Tuesday night in the Champions League.
Football Insider verdict
At the time, there was a lot of speculation surrounding Isco’s career as he wasn’t given a consistent run in the Madrid first-team during the early stages of his career at the Bernabeu. Although he had to bide his time, the Spaniard has become one of an integral member of the squad and his performances have seen him evolve into a potential successor for Andres Iniesta in the Spain national team. Of course, it must have been a massive blow for Spurs to miss out on the youngster but Isco must be applauded for wanting to prove himself in arguably the biggest club in world football.
