Report: West Ham face agonising wait as star man fights for fitness v Southampton
West Ham face an agonising wait to see is star attacker Manuel Lanzini is fit enough to take part in their crunch clash against Southampton after picking up an injury on international duty, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim on their website that the 25-year-old is set to miss his Argentina’s clash against Spain on Tuesday having already been forced to sit out of a training session with his country, leaving the Hammers sweating over his availability.
Lanzini has been a crucial member of the club’s squad, scoring three goals and chipping in with eight assists in 23 appearances across all competitions this season, and David Moyes will have been hoping to have him available for what will be a crunch clash in the fight for Premier League survival.
Southampton visit the London Stadium on Saturday sitting in 18th, two points and a single place behind the Hammers, knowing victory would push Moyes and his men into the drop zone.
Football Insider verdict
Lanzini is a talisman in the West Ham side and having him missing for such a crucial clash would be one major bombshell for the club. He might not be scoring as many goals as expected but he is serving up the opportunities for his teammates, and after a dreadful run of form, which has seen the club fall back into the relegation battle, his presence could well be the difference. Missing out against Spain will give him more chance to recover but there will be fears that it will not be enough. Every point counts as we enter the final stretch of the season and when a player like Lanzini is absent, it can have a massive effect on how the side perform. You can be certain the Saints are celebrating at the news, as will a number of other clubs around the Irons.
