By Dominic Toner
West Ham have made a bid for Southampton defender Jose Fonte, according to a report.
The Sun claim that the Hammers have made a £4million bid to sign the centre-back as manager Slaven Bilic looks to bolster his defence with a player he is keen on signing.
The report details that West Ham have joined Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and Everton in the race to sign Fonte, who has made it clear he wants to leave St Mary’s this month.
Fonte looks certain to leave Southampton in January and Bilic will be hoping he completes a move to the London Stadium.
The 33-year-old is regarded as a consistent defender in the Premier League and has made 19 appearances across all competitions this season.

The centre-back is now keen to on leaving the South Coast and West Ham could do with him after struggling defensively this campaign.
The Londoners have conceded 35 goals in their 20 Premier League matches and also suffered a crushing 5-0 home defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Friday.
Fonte would bring some pedigree to the Hammers squad as he recently helped Portugal win the Euro 2016 trophy.
Football Insider verdict:
West Ham should certainly look to beat their Premier League rivals to Fonte’s signature as he is still a quality player. The 33-year-old is still one of the most reliable defenders in the league and he would definitely add to the squad. Fonte and Reid could form an unstoppable partnership at the back and the Hammers quickly need to address their defensive problems. The big interest in Fonte suggests that he is a top player and West Ham will do very well to sign him. Everton may be in pole position as manager Ronald Koeman has previously worked with Fonte, but a move to the glamorous London Stadium could convince him.
In other West Ham transfer news, the club have entered a two-horse race for a defender with six months left on his contract.
