Returning Celtic attacker could be Old Firm wild card
COMMENT
Looking ahead to Sunday’s Old Firm derby, Celtic have been boosted with the recent return to the first-team squad of Patrick Roberts, and it wouldn’t be a shock if Brendan Rodgers started the on-loan Manchester City winger at Ibrox.
Normally it would be a gamble to throw a player who hasn’t featured for three months into the first team for such a vital match, but Rodgers has form for doing it, Marvin Compper started the recent Scottish Cup victory over Morton after not having been on the bench following an injury.
Roberts has been on the bench for the Hoops, most recently in the win over Morton, but interestingly enough he hasn’t featured in a match yet.
This suggests that he could be saving the player’s return for a big match, and there is no bigger match in Scotland than the Old Firm derby.
Rangers won’t be expecting the 21-year-old to start the game, and Roberts would give the Ibrox side plenty of problems to deal with.
James Forrest on one wing and Roberts on the other could prove to be a match-winning combination for the Hoops, and with the Bhoys needing a win to all but secure the title playing Roberts is a risk they should take.
