Revealed: Big Newcastle development could inflict £35m+ Tottenham blow

Newcastle United’s Champions League exit could cost the Premier League a fifth European qualification spot, sources have told Football Insider.

AC Milan’s 2-1 win at St James’ Park on Wednesday night means that Newcastle have finished fourth in Group F and have been eliminated from Europe for the 2023/24 season.

Newcastle join Manchester United as the only English teams to suffer group-stage elimination this season.

Tottenham

Their short-lived spell in Europe means that England are unlikely to be handed an extra qualification spot for next season’s Champions League with Italy and Germany ahead on coefficient points.

Tottenham are currently fifth in the Premier League table and are currently the team at risk of missing out on Champions League participation in 2024/25.

Spurs would be guaranteed to earn a minimum of £35million if they competed in next season’s Champions League, but their chances have now suffered a blow.

The top two ranked nations at the end of this season are set to be granted an extra spot in the new Swiss-style format next year.

Germany currently tops the charts with 13.36 coefficient points while Italy rank second with 13.14 – England follow in third with 12.13.

The points are calculated via the average coefficient of all teams taking part in Europe for each country, with each win worth two points, draws worth one and a defeat worth zero.

Bonus points are also awarded for reaching the further stages of a competition, with a round-of-16 appearance in the Champions League worth five points.

Man City, Arsenal, Brighton, West Ham, Liverpool and Aston Villa will continue to build England’s coefficient points after reaching the knockout stages of all three European competitions.
