Revealed: Carlos Bocanegra withdraws from Rangers race after interview – sources

Atlanta United technical director Carlos Bocanegra has ruled himself out of the running for the director of football role at Rangers, sources have told Football Insider.

The 44-year-old was interviewed for the role to replace Ross Wilson, who left Ibrox in April to join Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest.

However, Football Insider understands that the former USA international has decided to withdraw from the process.

Bocanegra, who spent two years at Rangers as a player between 2011-2013, is happy in the United States with Atlanta and has therefore decided to stay with the MLS outfit.

Rangers will now continue their search for a new director of football with Bocanegra out of the running.

During his two years in Glasgow as a player, Bocanegra made 41 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and assisting twice.

He also featured for Fulham, Chicago Fire and Stade Rennais in his 14-year career, before hanging up his boots in 2014 and becoming a director in Atlanta a year later.

During his eight years at Atlanta, the MLS franchise have won the MLS Cup in 2018 and the US Open Cup and the Campeones Cup in 2019.

Having joined Atlanta just a year after it was founded as an MLS side, Bocanegra played a pivotal role in the club’s growth to become MLS champions.

He signed a contract extension with Atlanta United in 2017 that added the role of Vice President to his responsibilities at the club.
