Sources: Celtic plan revealed as star striker wants to sign new contract

Celtic have told Leigh Griffiths he need to stay fit and on form next season to secure a new contract, Football Insider can reveal.

The Scotland international, 29, has reignited his career since the turn of the year and formed a potent strike partnership with Odsonne Edouard.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider the club have been delighted with Griffiths’ resurgence but want further evidence he can continue to deliver the goods before handing him a new deal.

The centre-forward missed the second half of last season due to personal problems and appeared to be surplus to requirements at Parkhead.

Leeds had an enquiry for Griffiths knocked back in January as Celtic made clear they still had faith in him.

That has been repaid with a series of sparkling displays, including eight goals since the winter break.

Edouard’s future at Celtic is in major doubt amid strong interest from clubs down south as well as across Europe this summer.

But Griffiths is set to remain to extend his time at the Glasgow giants into what would be a seventh season.

Griffiths has a superb scoring record for not only Celtic but also former clubs Wolves, Dundee, Hibernian and Livingston.

He has netted more than 200 times in club football at senior level, with 115 of those come from 234 games in a Hoops shirt.

Griffiths told Open Goal in a recent interview that he wants to finish his career at Celtic.

His current contract runs until the summer of 2022.

In other Celtic news, Bruce claims the Hoops could sign the next Odsonne Edouard as they move for an England-based striker.
