Revealed: Celtic to let 28-year-old go back down south, he wants out

Celtic and Moritz Bauer are set to go their separate ways at the end of the season after he failed to do enough to secure a permanent transfer, Football Insider understands.

The 28-year-old was one of three Hoops right-back signings last summer after completing a season-long loan from Stoke City.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club have no plans activate their option to buy Bauer and he wants out in any case.

The Scottish champions can sign the Austria international for a fee that is believed to be around £1.5million.

But Bauer had dropped behind Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed in the right-back pecking order before the season was suspended.

He was even struggling to make the matchday squad, partly due to Lennon’s use of a 3-5-2 formation that allowed him to pair striker duo Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard.

Bauer is a far more orthodox defender than Frimpong, the jet-heeled teenager who can also slot in at wing-back on the right flank.

He was competing with James Forrest for that position up until the middle of last month, which forced Bauer to the fringes.

In total, the six-times international has made just made nine starts among 13 appearances in all competitions this season.

It remains to be seen whether Bauer will remain at Stoke beyond this summer.

He has a contract with the Potters that runs until the summer of 2023.
