Revealed: The Man City midfielder who looks certain to leave in January

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is almost certainly set to leave the club in January and he has an exit option on the table, sources have told Football Insider.

The 29-year-old is well down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola and will have to move away from the Etihad in order to find guaranteed game time.

Phillips hasn’t played a single Premier League minute for Man City in almost two years now, last featuring in November 2023.

This season, the former Leeds United man has just eight minutes of competitive football under his belt, coming off the bench as Manchester City beat Huddersfield 2-0 in the Carabao Cup.

Kalvin Phillips has likely Man City exit route

Sources say that it is unlikely that Phillips will leave Man City on a permanent deal in the January transfer window, as interested clubs won’t have the funds to make that happen.

Instead, the former England international is expected to depart on loan before his future can be reassessed next summer.

Phillips has had two loan spells in the past over the past few campaigns, but neither have worked out for the midfielder.

He spent the second half of the 2023/24 season at West Ham United, before completing a temporary move to Ipswich Town last term.

Phillips still has time to get back to his best

Philips moved from Leeds United to Man City at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, but it is no exaggeration to say that his time in Manchester has been a disaster.

The Englishman was branded “overweight” by Guardiola during his first pre-season at the club, and the situation has failed to improve since then.

In total, Phillips has made just 16 Premier League appearances for City across his three campaigns at the club, and has never managed to establish himself in the matchday squad, let alone the starting lineup.

However, the 29-year-old still has time to resurrect his career, but has to ensure that his next move is a successful one and to a club that can give him the opportunity to return to form.
