Revealed: This is why Tottenham want to hire Roberto De Zerbi after deal agreed

Tottenham are considering Roberto De Zerbi among the leading candidates for the permanent manager’s position after sacking Thomas Frank.

Spurs opted to push forward with appointing an interim boss, with Igor Tudor arriving on a short-term deal after agreeing terms, but plans are still being put in place for the end of the season.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, De Zerbi‘s Premier League experience and availability make him a primary option.

He left Marseille earlier this month following their elimination from the Champions League, but forged an impressive record with the Ligue 1 side.

While the Italian is not the only name on Tottenham’s shortlist as things stand, he remains highly thought of after his progress at Brighton and Marseille.

Tottenham eyeing Roberto De Zerbi appointment

Tottenham’s interest in De Zerbi comes as no surprise, with the boss still highly regarded in managerial circles, but they are not the only ones interested.

Football Insider revealed last month that Man United have spoken to De Zerbi previously and see him as a leading contender for their own head coach position.

Both clubs will be looking to appoint a permanent manager come the summer, when the pool of available options is expected to widen, but the former Brighton boss is a key target.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “They want to bring in an interim manager until the end of the season to see them secure survival and then maybe go for a big name in the summer.

“Tottenham want to make an appointment and bring in a ready-made replacement for Thomas Frank.

“He’s now free having left Marseille in recent days as well. He’s obviously got Premier League experience from a time at Brighton.

“He has been on the radar before for Tottenham so he’ll be one that I’m sure they will be looking at to see if they can maybe lure him to the club.”

Who else is on Tottenham’s managerial shortlist?

As mentioned previously, De Zerbi is not the only candidate Tottenham are looking at as things stand, with a number of high-profile bosses on their radar.

Chief among those options is Mauricio Pochettino, who is believed to be keen on a return to North London should he be offered the opportunity.

Football Insider revealed on 13 February that Pochettino’s appointment was impossible for Tottenham to do immediately, but could happen in the summer.

The boss is set to lead the host nation U.S.A at the World Cup in the summer and will not consider leaving his role until after the tournament is over.

Tudor’s appointment in recent days has only fuelled speculation that he could be the man to step in when they make a permanent move in the summer.
