Revealed: Update on Tottenham January signings plan after Daniel Levy development – sources

The pressure is growing on the Tottenham board to secure new signings early in the January window following Sunday’s abysmal display against Aston Villa.

Supporters turned on chairman Daniel Levy as the team slumped to a 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, with Antonio Conte telling them afterwards that fifth place in the Premier League is the best they can hope for.

The performance was met with boos from the home supporters and sections of the crowd chanted “Daniel Levy get out of our club” at the final whistle.

It is not an unfamiliar position for Spurs and Levy, with the opening of the January window adding to the pressure on the board.

Football Insider has been told the club are planning to sign at least two new players in January, with right wing-back, centre-back and attack the priorities.

Discussions are taking place every day with agents and intermediaries to secure the new faces, but there would need to be a big-money exit for three new signings to come in.

The problems have been exacerbated to injuries to the senior forwards, with Dejan Kulusevski joining Richarlison and Lucas Moura on the sidelines against Villa after breaking down with a muscle injury before the game.

Moura’s future at Spurs is already up in the air with his contract expiring at the end of the season and the likelihood growing that he will leave on a free transfer.

Conte once again used his media conference after the Villa match to shed light on his own frustrations, and the need for a deeper and stronger squad for the second half of the campaign.

“We have to try to recover all the [injured] players and then we have to know that in every game we have to fight and show that we are strong,” said Conte.

“The league will be very difficult for us. I want to be honest, I want to be very clear. I have said this to the club, I have said my opinions. The fans deserve the best. Maybe to stay in 5th is the best. Maybe 6th, 7th, 5th or 4th is the best.”

Managing director Fabio Paratici has been charged with repeating his impressive work of last January, when Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur – both injured against Villa – were brought in.

But Paratici is operating within a strict budget and the current word from Tottenham is that no new signings are currently in the bag.
