Mateusz Bogusz is set to be the Leeds United breakthrough star of the new season after blowing Marcelo Bielsa away in training and pre-season, Football Insider has learned.

The midfielder, 17, has made a big impact for United both in their matches to prepare for the new Championship campaign as well as behind the scenes on the training ground.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Bogusz has made a huge impression on manager Bielsa, who is ready to fast-track him into the team in the same way as he did with Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton last season.

Bogusz, who turns 18 next month, is set to be named in the Leeds squad for their Championship opener against Bristol City on Sunday and has been earmarked for a major role in the coming months.

The club’s staff believe the rising star, who is a versatile midfielder who can operate in central or more attacking positions, has the technical quality and game maturity, to play more than 20 matches for the first team in 2019-20.

The Polish teenager only arrived at United in January, when he signed on a two-and-a-half year deal from Ruch Chorzow in his homeland.

He initially impressed for the club’s age-group sides and was then named in four matchday squads as an unused substitute, including in the play-off semi-finals against Derby County last season.

Bogusz has trained solely with the senior squad since they returned in late June and has seized his opportunity to impress Bielsa and the United coaching staff.

He was a member of the Whites squad which travelled to Australia for games against Manchester United and Western Sydney Warriors, scoring in the second of those games.

The teenager also delivered another bright cameo as a replacement for Mateusz Klich in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Cagliari in Italy.
