Aston Villa

Frank McAvennie would be incensed if Aston Villa beat West Ham to the signing of Bournemouth striker Josh King in January.

The Hammers and Celtic legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said that it would be “embarrassing” for his former club if they missed out on the 28-year-old having seen the success of Ollie Watkins at Villa Park.

The Athletic claim that Villa are “likely to be consider” a move for the 28-year-old as they look for offensive reinforcements in the transfer market.

As revealed by Football Insider, West Ham believe they have laid the foundations to sign King in January having failed to land him in the summer window.

The versatile forward, who has little over six months left on his contract at the Vitality Stadium, has played just six times in the Championship this season due to injury.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the Norway international’s future, McAvennie said: “I am a big fan of his.

“It would be ridiculous if he went to Aston Villa because they already got Watkins. How can Aston Villa go and sign all of these players?

“It would be embarrassing for West Ham if they missed out on King as well.

“You just have to look at how well Watkins has done for Villa this season.”

A £28million signing from Brentford in September, Watkins has scored six goals in his first 12 Premier League games.

That fee could rise to £33million if a number of performance related add-ons are achieved.

In other news, Huddersfield, Queens Park Rangers and Preston are all keen to make a move for an Aston Villa striker in January.
