Kevin Phillips has ridiculed suggestions Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish has scuppered a summer move to Man United after breaking lockdown.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, admitted it was “stupid” of the 24-year-old to go and meet his friend but insisted it will make no difference to United and their strong interest in a blockbuster transfer.

Grealish apologised on social media after reports emerged that he had been involved in a car accident on Sunday.

The English attacker admitted to breaking the lockdown measures imposed by the government to help reduce the spread of the virus COVID-19 in the UK.

When asked for his reaction to the incident, Phillips told Football Insider: “It is stupid. A young kid is going to make mistakes and he has made a few but I am not going to slam him. He has come out and apologised and yes he was stupid and he will get punished for that.

“The idea that Manchester United are now going to pull the plug is just ridiculous. If they want a player they are not going to lose interest because he broke the curfew.

“It is stupid and there is a slight immaturity there but he will learn from it. I am certain you will not see him out and about now until we are all allowed. He is just a young kid that has made a mistake.

“Jack is a fantastic player and he is only going to get better and better.”

According to the Independent, the English midfielder has put a potential move to Manchester United ‘at risk’ with his actions this weekend.

Grealish is to be fined and disciplined by the club with all proceeds donated to The University Hospitals Charity in Birmingham.
