'I could try to find another team' - Rangers 23-year-old reveals frustrations
Rangers defender Fabio Cardoso is refusing to throw in the towel on his Ibrox career despite having found himself on the sidelines under new manager Graeme Murty.
The 23-year-old Portuguese has only made one competitive appearance since Pedro Caixinha was sacked in October – just months after signing Cardoso from Vitoria Setubal.
Despite having found himself on the fringes of the squad, Cardoso played more minutes than any other player during the Gers’ trip to the United States to take part in the Florida Cup.
The defender admitted it was “frustrating” not playing but insists his future remains at Ibrox.
“I don’t want to give up. I could try to find another team but playing for Rangers is going to help me a lot in my career,” Cardoso said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“I’m learning a lot even when I’m not playing. This is the right place to develop as a footballer, as a person and to be successful.
“I’m ready to give my best every day in training and when I get my chance in the team.
“Of course, it’s frustrating not to be in the team but I respect the decision of the manager.”
Cardoso was a mainstay in the starting XI under Caixinha – Cardoso was an ever present before missing Caixinha’s final game with a broken nose – but has only appeared once as a substitute since.
The defender is under contract at Ibrox until 2020 after penning a three-year deal when he moved from his homeland over the summer.
Cardoso faces competition from Danny Wilson, David Bates, Bruno Alves and Aidan Wilson for a place in Murty’s squad in the second-half of the season.
Cardoso will be hoping to get a chance to prove himself when the Gers return to domestic action against Fraserburgh on January 21st in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
