One of finest around: Everton 23-year-old is the best youngster in 2016

Football Insider chooses which Everton youngster has been the club’s best player in 2016.

Romelu Lukaku is the obvious choice as Everton’s best young player throughout the last 12 months and he just makes the cut after turning 23 in the summer.

The striker has been one of the Merseysiders’ best players in recent seasons and it’s easy to see why so many clubs are wanting to take him away from Goodison Park.

The 23-year-old was named Everton’s young player of the season at the end of the 2015-16 campaign and was a strong contender for the Player of the Season award too.

He finished the campaign as the top goal-scorer, netting 25 goals in 46 appearances, with nine of those coming in 2016.

Already this season, he has netted 14 goals in 19 appearances for club and country, including nine in the Premier League for Everton.

Only Sergio Aguero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Diego Costa and Alexis Sanchez have a better goal-scoring record and the fact he is considered in the same bracket as those world-class stars speaks volumes about his talent.

Lukaku was discarded by Chelsea in 2014 and it was perhaps their worst decision given his prolific record since his departure but he must be considering a move away from Goodison Park soon.

The striker was persuaded to stay in the summer by Ronald Koeman despite heavy speculation on his future but it’s likely he will leave at the end of the season and pursue Champions League football.

In other Everton news, this 26-year-old was the flop of the year after being frozen out following an unsuccessful transfer.
