Rob Edwards ‘could be sacked’ by Wolves this season, pundit explains shock claim

Rob Edwards may not even see out the season at Wolves if results do not go his way now that he has been appointed as their new manager.

That is according to Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier, who has exclusively told Football Insider that results need to go his way for him to stay in the role as he takes over at Wolves.

Wolves have endured a nightmare start to the new season, with no league wins in any of their first 15 games to currently sit bottom of the Premier League.

They are already eight points from safety at this stage, and Vitor Pereira unsurprisingly lost his job as Wolves boss recently after a bad defeat away at fellow strugglers Fulham.

Football Insider revealed last week that Wolves were in talks with Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards after he had been identified as their top target for the vacant role.

Edwards has now taken over at Molineux after being put on gardening leave by Boro, with an almighty task ahead to keep the club in the top-flight.

Edwards faces a tough task to keep Wolves in the Premier League

The international break has afforded all parties some time to complete a deal, with Football Insider revealing that Wolves are backing Edwards to unite the club considering his pre-existing relationship with their fans.

He played for the West Midlands side 111 times between 2004 and 2008 and was a first-team coach there between 2015 and 2017.

The 42-year-old left Middlesbrough in third place in the second-tier after being appointed on Teesside prior to this campaign, and Le Tissier has questioned Edwards’ decision to leave Boro for Wolves in an exclusive interview with Football Insider.

Le Tissier unsure if Edwards will see out the season at Wolves

There has been a conveyor belt of bosses going in and out of the Molineux doors in recent times, with Edwards being the fifth permanent manager hired in the last four-and-a-half years.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former England and Southampton striker Le Tissier admitted that he can see Edwards being relieved of his duties if results go badly wrong like they did for his club Southampton last season.

He said: “It depends on the mindset of the owners at the moment. If they are looking at him to take them forward because he’s got pedigree in the Championship, then (Edwards being sacked) would be very surprising if they then got relegated.

But obviously it all depends on the results and how they go about getting relegated. Because if you look at how Southampton got relegated last season, that was a very different way to the other clubs that got relegated.

I mean, we were cut adrift a long way in advance and barely won a football match. So if he has that kind of season, then he is going to come under pressure.

It would then be difficult for the ownership to then take him forward into the next season if the fans are disgruntled with the way that the team are performing. So, I guess, as with anything in football, it all depends on results.”
