Rob Edwards to Wolves takes twist – ‘I’m told he’s building a house in Birmingham’

Rob Edwards’ move to Wolves has caused a lot of controversy due to the manner of his Middlesbrough departure.

Edwards is expected to take over at Molineux in the coming days after being given permission to talk to the Premier League side.

The 42-year-old is leaving Boro on bad terms, effectively forcing through the switch to Wolves despite signing a three-year contract at the Riverside over the summer.

While the Old Gold are staring down the barrel of Premier League relegation, Middlesbrough are sitting second in the Championship, raising question marks about Edwards’ decision to move.

Rob Edwards was always going to move back home

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs –believes that Edwards‘ move to Wolves makes more sense when you understand the wider context.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed that, according to his sources, the former Luton Town boss has been building a house in Birmingham despite being in charge of Middlesbrough.

Edwards had a stint as interim manager at Wolves back in 2016. He is also from the area and supports the club.

Wyness added that the Midlands was always going to be his base, and this move allows him to be back with his family.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, I’ve got to say, initially I thought, that’s ridiculous. You’re going to leave Middlesbrough, who are probably going to get promoted, and you’re going to go down with Wolves. That was my first thought.

“But then a few things started to come together. I spoke to an old contact of mine in Birmingham who said, yeah, Rob Edwards is building a house just down the road from where I live. So that was already where his base was going to be. So that sort of makes sense.

“Then I thought, if Wolves are quite prepared to accept that they could get relegated and keep him to rebuild for the championship, then he’s back home with his family as well. It all started to make sense.”

Wolves’ January transfer plans after Rob Edwards appointment

Meanwhile, Edwards is unlikely to receive an abundance of funds to utilise in the January transfer window at Wolves, sources have told Football Insider.

Despite the fact that their top-flight status is hanging in the balance, sources say that the hierarchy at the Midlands side are unwilling to spend big when the window reopens.

Wolves could instead look to make some loan signings in the January window rather than risking permanent additions.
