Rob Green posts lengthy statement to fans after Leeds defeat

By Alex Stevens

Rob Green pleaded for understanding from Leeds fans in the wake of the team’s second consecutive defeat on Saturday.

The Championship giants lost ground in the promotion race as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Cardiff at Elland Road.

It came six days after a 2-1 setback away to Huddersfield in a tempestuous encounter marred by a brawl sparked by an altercation between Garry Monk and David Warner.

Goalkeeper Green, 37, admitted it has been a testing period for the players but told supporters that they were working hard to arrest the mini-slide.

“I appreciate the frustration at today’s performance and we as players feel the same,” said Green in a lengthy statement to supporters on his personal Twitter account.

“Sometimes it doesn’t go right. We hope you as fans can understand that and carry on your fantastic support on Tuesday and beyond.”

Leeds had a remarkable 71 per cent of the possession against Neil Warnock’s side on Sunday but struggled to build on an encouraging start.

Goals from Sean Morrison and Kenneth Zohore secured the three points for the visitors as Warnock’s game plan to sit back, soak up the pressure and hit the home side on the counter-attack worked to a tee.

“Teams coming to Elland Road to defend is a new challenge we face and must learn to combat,” added Green in his Twitter message. “We have a young, exciting team and everyone is trying as hard as possible to play attractive and winning football.”

Leeds supporters have become accustomed to the team grinding opponents down this season but there was little evidence of that against Cardiff.

Garry Monk’s side were well below par and have lost ground in the promotion race on a day in which Newcastle, Brighton and Huddersfield all secured victories, while Reading earned a draw.

Leeds remain fifth in the table but have fallen 11 points behind leaders Newcastle, who won 1-0 against Wolves at Molineux.
