Robbie Fowler: This Liverpool star can't hide behind promising tag anymore

By Matt Farr

Anfield icon Robbie Fowler believes Emre Can must show significant improvement if he is to earn a pay rise.

Can, 23, will have just a year left to run on his current contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, but his excessive demands have proven to be a stumbling block in his bid to land a new deal.

It has been reported by the Mirror that Can’s agent is looking to land the midfielder a new contract worth at least double his current wage, which stands at £35,000-a-week, but Jurgen Klopp is unwilling to pay over the odds.

Klopp remains unconvinced by Can’s displays for Liverpool since his arrival at the club in 2014, and in his column for the Mirror, Fowler demanded the player show more to earn himself a lucrative new deal.

He wrote: “Like a lot of Liverpool fans, I’ve yet to be totally convinced by Can and I reckon he really does need a massive end to the season if he is going to justify a significant pay rise.

“He’s got promise, he’s got obvious quality, but have we seen enough of it? He’s a full Germany international who has been to major finals and he has also had two full seasons in the first team at Anfield.

“So really, he can’t hide behind the promising tag anymore.”

Can’s uncertain future at Anfield has reportedly caught the attention of several top European clubs, including Juventus, who are willing to take him off their hands in the summer.

A return to the German Bundesliga has also been speculated, with RB Leipzig, Hoffenheim and former club Bayer Leverkusen understood to be set to rival Juventus for his signature.

But Klopp remains an admirer of Can’s talents, and is willing to offer him an extended stay at the club if he lowers his wage demands.

In other Liverpool news, this Liverpool outcast is determined to prove he still has a future with the club.
