Robbie Savage claims Tottenham have gone backwards
By Dominic Toner
Robbie Savage believes that Tottenham have taken a step backwards this season as their rivals have improved drastically.
Spurs competed for the Premier League title in the last campaign and ended up finishing third in the table, which was their highest ever finish in the competition.
However, the north London club are currently fifth-placed in the table and are 10 points behind leaders Chelsea.
The race for the Premier League’s title has intensified this season, with Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and United all regarded as potential champions in the pre-season.
Savage feels that Mauricio Pochettino’s side have gone backwards from last year and the current gap to the to teams is wider.

“At the halfway stage last year, Tottenham were third in the table, four points behind the leaders – but the current gap to Chelsea is wider and Spurs are currently fifth,” Savage said, as quoted by the Mirror. “By my reckoning, going from third to fifth is going backwards.”
Spurs are currently trying to establish themselves as a top four side and will be desperate for a Champions League spot this season.
They managed to earn a European spot last year as Leicester became the unlikely title winners, but the league’s big clubs have returned to the top this season.
Pochettino’s side will still believe that they can compete at the top end of the table and recorded a convincing 4-1 victory over Southampton on Wednesday.
Spurs travel to Watford in their next game and then will face a huge test as they host in-form Chelsea at White Hart Lane.
In other Tottenham news, Paul Merson has predicted the club’s upcoming match against Watford.
