‘Robbing a living’ – Liverpool fans rip into player who lost possession 13 times vs Sunderland

Liverpool fans have slammed Cody Gakpo after he performed poorly in their 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool’s late weekend defeat to Man City and other midweek results had left them five points behind fifth-placed Chelsea before they travelled to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland had not lost a Premier League match on home turf all season, and that record looked set to remain before Virgil van Dijk headed the Reds into the lead from Mo Salah‘s corner in the 61st minute.

A game of limited chances saw Arne Slot‘s side take all three points back to Merseyside and remain firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

He handed Gakpo a 20th league start of the campaign on the left wing, but the Netherlands international once again struggled to make a positive impact in attack.

Cody Gakpo failed to make a positive impact vs Sunderland

Gakpo has struggled for form this season after becoming Liverpool’s first-choice left-winger following Luis Diaz’s summer exit.

The left-winger had scored just twice in his previous 14 outings before facing Sunderland, and his barren run in front of goal continued as he failed to even test Robin Roefs in the hosts’ goal.

He took four corners but was unable to direct them to a teammate as just one of his eight crosses all game were accurate.

Gakpo only created one chance from open-play too, while he lost possession a whopping 13 times before being taken off for Curtis Jones in the 75th minute.

Liverpool fans slammed Gakpo for his performance against Man City last weekend, and they flocked to social media once more to criticise him despite their win at the Stadium of Light.

Liverpool fans fume at Gakpo for ‘infuriating’, ‘one-dimensional’ performance

Slot’s job has been under pressure at Liverpool over the last few months, and he could well leave the club at the end of this campaign despite a recent general uptick in form.

Many fans have used his constant trust of Gakpo to start games against him this season, and it was no different after the win at Sunderland.

One took to X to say: “Cody Gakpo starting week in week out this season is one of the most painful experiences I’ve witnessed at this club, and I’ve suffered the (Roy) Hodgson era.”

While another asked: “I mean seriously, how can anyone watch Cody Gakpo at the moment and think he should get game time, let alone start, after start, after start?

And one Liverpool supporter simply wrote: “Cody Gakpo is genuinely the worst footballer I’ve ever seen in my life.”
